Acer Updates

  • Heh-heh. If it were mine, I'd just wait a day or three till the next Windows update notice appears on the task bar. Click it. And you get a chance to look at what updates are recommended (checkmarked) or optional (uncheckmarked). I usually just let it do the recommended updates --- sometimes I don't bother with it right away because I don't feel like it or don't want to tie up the machine at the time. Sometimes you do have to re-start the machine. Most times not. And yes you can automate it to do it at a certain time and date thru the control panel --- just type the word 'update' in the control panel's search function and a section on Windows update will appear in which you can do all this stuff --- just follow the directions therein, they're fairly straightforward.

  • I can see all of the updates if I go to Window Update, and some are checked already. But if I just click ok and let them update--will it update in the correct order of the dates?

This is karma---I know. My older laptop has Vista and I stopped doing the Microsoft updates in December 2011 because I was getting black screens after the updates. Now if I want to use the laptop at all, I'll have to go back, restore the updates and let them run. That computer will probably explode.

  • Forget about Vista --- you probably shoulda upgraded that computer back to XP anyway.

FWIW, don't worry about the order of Win7 checkmarked updates. Just let it do its thing. You may still get a black screen but it probably won't be the fault of the updates. Or maybe it will.

Be brave. We'll be here to help. Just do it. Or you'll be forever wondering --- 'If I don't do it, how can I ever be sure?'. 8^)

Let us know after you've run the updates.

  • Thanks for the encouragement--I bravely ran all of the updates on both computers and everything is working great. The Vista updating took three hours, but the new Acer Windows 7 updating took less than an hour. In fact, I think it was a good idea to to wait for a couple years and update the Vista--I think the bad updates causing black screens were weeded out after they screwed up computers.

  • Good for you, Suzanne. You'll probably soon be getting more update notices. I get them almost daily particularly for Windows defender. Just let them install when you take a break from the computer. They're usually done without having to reboot in a matter of minutes. But I still keep my fingers crossed when I install them just in case there are any gremlins around trying to sneak in. 8^)
